Kurdish storytelling tradition takes first steps on long road to UNESCO recognition

As one of the oldest cultural expressions in Mesopotamia, dengbej should be added to the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage. This is according to opera singer Pervin Chakar, who has started a petition to gather support for and raise awareness about the importance of dengbej, an ancient Kurdish storytelling tradition. Chakar, who is originally Kurdish, lives in Germany and performs all over Europe, told Fanack, “Collecting signatures is only part of the campaign. I want to cooperate with music and cultural institutes to make this happen.”

Politie voert app in tegen etnisch profileren maar effectiviteit is nu al twijfelachtig

(In October and November 2019 I did a short internship for my Master’s International Journalism at Edinburgh Napier University. At Pointer, the open source and data journalism desk of Dutch public broadcaster KRO/NCRV, I investigated and wrote this story about ethnic profiling by police.)

Een politie-app ontwikkeld voor de strijd tegen etnisch profileren wordt per januari 2020 landelijk ingevoerd. Dat besloot de politie in augustus zonder daar ruchtbaarheid aan te geven. Het is alleen de vraag of de invoering daadwerkelijk inzicht gaat geven in de praktijk van etnisch profileren, laat staan effectief zal zijn bij de bestrijding ervan, blijkt uit onderzoek van Pointer. Politiechef Lute Nieuwert, verantwoordelijk voor de invoering van de app MEOS (Mobiel Effectiever Op Straat): “Laat dat etnisch profileren nou even weg uit het verhaal. Het gaat ons erom dienders op straat een hulpmiddel te geven voor professionelere controles.”
